- Race format
and team drivers
In international
GT-racing the format is mainly Endurance racing, typically lasting 2-24
hours. During these racing there is usually regulations stating how long
stints a driver may run before handing over to another team driver. At
the Nürburgring you may run 2,5hours before changing drivers, but
normally you need to refuel after appr 2 hours. Being two-four drivers
creates a great team spirit and makes you learn a lot, but it also sets
high pressure on each driver to deliver professionally by doing fast, smooth
stints.
- Pitstops
and strategy
To make a
pit stop as quick as possible driver changes and tyre changes are drilled.
A typical driver change can go just below 20 seconds. Dependant on the
organizers rules you may also fuel before, after or during the driver changes,
but to minimize the refuelling time GT racecars have fastfuelling systems,
and also to minimize the need to refuel most GT-cars carry 120 litres of
gasonline. The race strategies are very important just like in Formula
1, Indy 500 or the Le Mans, and the team always try to execute the pit
stops when there is a safety car situation or yellow flags on the track.
- Performance
During a one
hour stint flat out the body is subjected to great stresses. It is usually
very hot inside the car, the concentration level is extreme and the G-forces
during every acceleration, braking and corner mercilessly wears out every
muscle in your body. It is obviously even worse in a two hour stint. To
withstand this and keep the head cool it is necessary to be in good shape
as well as being able to focus mentally no matter the strain. Otherwise,
when the body is exhausted, your head gets sluggish, the concentration
level decreases and judgement gives way and that is when mistakes start
to happen. Also, the track properties affect the wear on the driver (and
the car), for instance the Nürburgring Nordschleife is extremly demanding
giving little or no room for relaxation whereas on the opposite side the
Scandinavian Raceway at Anderstorp has some long flat straights which makes
it possible to get a second or two for relaxation.
- Goals
